OAG Internship Program (Undergraduate and Graduate Students)
The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) seeks highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students to work as volunteers during the academic year and summer vacation. The internship program is designed to provide students with a challenging experience that reflects the demands and rewards of public service. Each year OAG recruits a diverse population of students, including geographic diversity as well as educational institutions from across the United States, as well as internationally. The OAG has a diverse practice area and offers students an array of practice areas to select from. In addition, OAG is the l0th largest Attorney General Office in the United States, and is the largest law firm in the District of Columbia.
Interning at OAG is a great experience! You will be taught a variety of interesting legal tasks such as assisting attorneys with legal research, motions, advice memos, discovery, trial, or office matters. On any given day you may be researching, gathering documents, answering interrogatories, or taking notes during a witness deposition. Perhaps, you may be needed to assist attorneys at trial or a hearing, and enjoy seeing first hand how to select a jury or make a dynamic opening statement.
Many OAG interns find themselves in the midst of newsworthy and politically charged cases such as the recent gun control case in District of Columbia v. Heller, 478 F. 3d 370 (D.C. Cir. 2007), a case that will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court and one that involves the second amendment; or the battle over property rights to build a new baseball stadium for the Washington Nationals in Siegel, Inc. v. District of Columbia, 892 A.2d 387 (D.C. Ct. App. Feb 9, 2006). You will also participate in several field trips including a tour of the DC jail; MPD headquarters/training academy; a visit to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to view an oral argument. In addition, our internship program does not just offer you work experience but throughout the summer you will attend presentations from OAG attorneys on case law regarding environmental issues, ethics, opening and closing statements, taking depositions, domestic violence, child protection, criminal and juvenile prosecution, appellate advocacy, etc.
You will also develop your legal writing and research skills by receiving training in Lexis research, and understanding how to apply various federal, state, and common laws to your cases. You will develop your legal writing skills by drafting motions, advice memos, mediation statements, or case briefs.
If you do well at OAG, our attorneys will be glad to provide you with a letter of recommendation for future career endeavors and/or law school applications.
